The Different Types of Commercial Roofing

A new commercial roof is a great investment for business centers, commercial infrastructure and even multi-family homes. Choosing the best roofing type for your property, however, isn’t easy for people without roofing knowledge. That is why Twin Rivers Roofing and Construction, the expert roofers in our area, created this handy guide to the different types of commercial roofing systems.

The Different Types of Commercial Roofing

Built-Up Roofing (BUR)

Built-up roofing (BUR) is considered an economical choice for flat roofs. It has three or more layers of fiberglass membrane coated with hot asphalt. The top layer consists of gravel and mineral blends to protect the surface from harsh weather, harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and mechanical damage.

PVC and TPO Single-Ply Membrane

PVC is short for polyvinyl chloride, a sturdy single-ply roofing membrane. It is known to perform well in both residential and commercial roofs. TPO, on the other hand, is a shortened acronym for thermoplastic polyolefin. It is a heat-welded, single-ply roofing membrane. TPO is popular because of its ability to reflect solar heat.

Both of these single-ply membranes are aesthetically pleasing and lightweight with advanced wear-and-tear resistance.

EPDM Single-Ply Membrane

An ethylene propylene diene monomer or EPDM single ply membrane is a rubber-based product with a reputation for durability. That is the reason why it’s commonly called “rubber roofing” by roofing contractors. One advantage of this particular roofing system is a convenience because the EPDM is easily applied to any roof surface.

Metal Roofing

While more expensive than other commercial roofing systems, metal roofs offer the most benefits. A metal roof requires only minimal maintenance and often lasts between 5 and 75 years. It is also highly resistant to fire, wind and impact. When paired with a reflective coating, it can reduce utility costs significantly due to more stable indoor temperatures.
